Rockin’ for education

On Feb. 28, Solana Highlands Elementary supporters will rock out to help bring science, art, physical education and technology to their children.

Solana Beach Foundation for Learning and Solana Highlands will present Rockin’ For Our Kids at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, featuring a reception with live and silent auctions from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by a concert at 10:30 p.m. with ‘80s new wave band The English Beat.

The Solana Beach Foundation for Learning’s purpose is to step in to fund programs that state funding does not cover.

In the fall, almost all of the district schools achieved their fall fundraising goals but with the state budget woes, there are still challenges to be met.

“We are in limbo but we’re keeping up the fight,” said Andrea MacDonald, event chair.

The goal for co-chairs MacDonald and Anne Peterson was to create many ways for parents to give.

The auction features teacher’s offerings to children such as a week without homework, free tutoring or the opportunity to be principal for the day.

The auction also features student art created by each grade levels.

Kindergarteners decorated ceramic pieces, first graders decorated platters, second graders made frames with “scenes of San Diego,” third graders decoupaged portable picnic tables and fourth graders did their own take on Jackson Pollack’s paintings.

The auction also includes “fund an item,” where a specific school need is auctioned off for a parent to help purchase for the school.

Due to the weak economy, this year’s party has changed a lot, MacDonald said. They have tried to keep their expenses low so the money can go straight to the children.

This year’s auction also stays away from the more luxury items but things that can really help district families, like weeks at camp and family outings.
