Rotary whackers over Chili & Quackers
This contest pits chili cook against chili cook, rubber ducky against rubber ducky.
The Del Mar Rotary’s first-ever Chili & Quackers Challenge kicks off from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at Powerhouse Park. The free event features a Ducky Derby in the ocean and a chili cook-off for restaurants and individuals.
The Ducky Derby, set for 4:30 p.m., will be the first of its kind to be held in Del Mar. The rubber ducks will be released in the ocean on a course set up by the Del Mar Lifeguards.
The owners of the first 10 ducks to cross the finish line will win prizes, including a new HDTV, Netbook and Wii game set-up.
Participants can adopt ducks for $10 each, or multiple ducks can be bought through special discounted packs. Duck “parents” don’t have to be present for the race. The winners will be contacted. Rotary hopes to sell at least 2,000 ducks for the derby.
“This will be a fun way to support Del Mar Rotary’s charitable work. The more folks help Del Mar Rotary, the more us Rotarians can go out and improve the lives of the less fortunate,” Sharyn Daly, Chili and Quackers Challenge co-chairwoman said.
The Chili Cook-Off, featuring restaurant and individual divisions, begins at 5:15 p.m. Restaurants will be charged $50 to enter, while individuals can participate for $20. Judges will be on hand to choose the winners.
In addition to those two winners, a special “Crowd’s Choice” will be awarded to the chef of the chili that was sampled the most. Restaurants must provide five gallons of chili for the event, while individuals must have at least two gallons available. Patrons can purchase tickets to enjoy the chili for $1 per taste in $5 packs.
A beer-and-wine tent will also be available for those over 21.
“We are excited to host a day of family fun, while at the same time raise awareness about all of the organizations that Del Mar Rotary supports. It is always great to have a good time while helping out those in need,” said Val Myers, the other co-chairwoman.
