Safety equipment purchase for child care facilities OK’d

At its July 21 meeting, the Del Mar Union School District board approved purchasing automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for its after-school child care facilities. The purchase comes at the request of Julie Geisbauer, the new director of after-school services and child care, after a review of the existing safety program.

While every school’s health office is outfitted with an AED, those offices are locked when the school day is over at 3 p.m. As students are at the child care center until 6 p.m., Geisbauer said it was important for them to have access to the AED, a portable device used in instances of possible heart attacks to assist rescuers. The additional eight AEDs will cost $13,635 and come out of the after-school and child care services’ enterprise fund.

Ocean Air child care center construction ahead of schedule

Construction of the Ocean Air School child care center is 10 days ahead of schedule, reported Randy Wheaton, maintenance supervisor for the Del Mar Union School District. Construction began on June 18 on a very tight schedule to open by the start of school on Aug. 30.

Ocean Air was the only school in the district without a childcare center.
