Stephen Dalton Architects received an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects 2009 Small Projects Award Program for the remodel of the Hanna Fenichel Center for Child Development in Solana Beach.

Functional improvements included new American’s with Disabilities Act-approved restrooms, an administrative office and a new roof structure to shelter exterior activities.

The Solana Beach architectural firm used color and pattern to reflect the fun and creativity of the center’s curriculum and provide the center with greater recognition and presence within the community.

“It’s a miraculous transformation of a utilitarian place into a playful and attractive space,” the awards jury wrote. “Simple forms and great use of colors really transform this previously unattractive preschool into an exciting activity area for the kids and the faculty.”

The award was presented to Stephen Dalton at the AIA’s national convention in San Francisco on May 1. The awards program recognizes design excellence and strives to raise public awareness of the value architects bring to projects, no matter the size or scope.
