Scientists, visitors tally lagoon life in BioBlitz
732 species found
Almost 900 visitors participated in the 9th Lagoon Day at the San Elijo Lagoon--three times as many participants than in years past. The main attraction this year was the BioBlitz, in which scientists raced to identify as many species of living organisms in the lagoon as possible within 24 hours. The final tally: 732.
Scientists are still working to categorize a handful of the organisms.
“It was a blast,” said Doug Gibson, executive director of the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy. “The scientists all had fun and we got some good information.”
