SD Mayor: Do not water plants, lawn

San Diego residents should refrain from watering their plants and lawns for at least seven days after the current rains end, to conserve the region’s drinking water, Mayor Jerry Sanders’s office announced Wednesday.

“The rains we have been receiving and may continue to get through next week are going to keep our lawns and gardens wet enough,’’ Sanders said in a statement. “There’s no need to turn on our sprinklers for a week or more.’’

Earlier this year, Sanders declared a water shortage emergency in San Diego, and called on San Diego residents to voluntarily conserve.

Necessitating the conservation efforts are ongoing drought conditions and a federal judge’s ruling that limits the amount of water that can be pumped from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in order to protect an endangered species of fish.

San Diego gets 90 percent of its water pumped in from the Sacramento River delta, or the Colorado River.
