Students help facilitate new Ugandan girls’ magazine

For the last two years, San Diego Jewish Academy teacher Jill Quigley has been working with a small community of Jewish girls in eastern Uganda.

Quigley’s Jewish Communities class established contact with the girls after learning they wanted to put out a magazine in their native country. The magazine would allow them to discuss their Jewish identity and empower them to become leaders in a community dominated by men.

Quigley’s students wrote letters and donated funds to purchase a laptop for the girls. Recently, the first edition of the Ugandan girls’ magazine arrived by e-mail.

Quigley said the inaugural magazine was the best thank you note the class could have received.

“This is another wonderful example of how SDJA has once again given opportunities to those less fortunate and has positively developed its students to become caring, respectful members of the Jewish community,” she said.
