Surf Girls U9 are champions

The San Diego Surf Girls Under-9 White soccer team was crowned State Cup champions on March 6 after defeating many of the best teams in Southern California.

In bracket play, Surf outscored its opponents 14-1, recording three wins and a tie. In the playoffs Round-of-16, Surf dominated MB Sand and Surf 4-0 and, in quarterfinal play, defeated Beach 2-0.

In the semifinal, Surf battled a tough Laguna Hills Eclipse team and came out ahead, 1-0, with the lone goal by an alert Jade Babcock-Chi, who scored off a rebound from the Eclipse goalie.

Then in the final match, Surf faced a familiar rival from several previous tournaments, the La Verne Lazers, and won 2-1 on heads up strikes from Claire Bernd and Cloe Frese coming off crossing passes from their teammates. Solid midfield and defensive play by Nicole Mossmer, Sawyer Simo, Logan Wells, Carly Larkin, Sophia Theriot, goalie Alexis Serna, and reserve play from Victoria Neilsen, Evelyn Gonzales, Kristen Kwasnica and Gabriela Enciso sealed the tournament victories.

Coach Steve Leacock praised the La Verne team as the best opponent they had faced this year and congratulated all of the girls for their efforts to make it to the final match.

During the 2009 season, the Surf GU9 girls played a record 12 tournaments within their age group, and their results were outstanding — nine as champions and three as finalists. In regular season Presidio League play, the Surf U9 girls finished first with a record of 12-0-2.

SurfWhite wins CalSouth event

SDSurfWhite recently won the CalSouth State Cup Soccer Tournament in Lancaster.

Fifty-one teams from Southern California competed in the President’s Division of the Girls Under-10 Tournament.

The Surf team competed in eight games on its way to the final, allowing only two goals in the entire tournament.

The final game versus the Legends FC team from east of Los Angeles was a true nail biter for both teams. After no score in the regular game, and no score in two over-time periods, both teams moved into penalty kicks.

The Surf team was down 2-0 in penalty kicks until key goals were made to move ahead 3-2 in penalty kicks.

Goalie Elle Samiere made two more saves on the way to the win.

The team is coached by Chris Lemay.
