Ten Questions: Entrepreneur lassos Internet
Jon Carder is a serial Internet entrepreneur who, before the age of 30, has created three multimillion-dollar Internet businesses.
The Del Mar resident launched his first business, BabysHeaven.com, with a $1,000 credit line out of his tiny college apartment. Within its second year, Baby’s Heaven grew to become one of the largest online baby stores. Carder’s second business, ClientShop.com was rated San Diego’s No. 1 Fastest Growing Private Company (San Diego Business Journal 2005) and was acquired by Internet Brands is 2006.
Jon is currently working on his third Internet startup, MojoPages.com. The goal is to radically change the phone book industry. MojoPages already has 1 million visitors a month and continues to grow rapidly.
What brought you to Del Mar?
I was 21 and had just become single. One of my best friends was living on Camino Del Mar so I moved next door. We had a lot of fun surfing and soaking up the nightlife.
What makes Del Mar special to you?
The gorgeous beaches, laid back atmosphere, beachfront living, great restaurants and its central location between downtown and North County.
If you could snap your fingers and have it done, what might you add, subtract or improve in Del Mar?
I would have a front patio on Jake’s or Poseidon that is open to the beach, like they do in Europe. Poseidon is almost there but they have the big cement wall that separates the beach and the restaurant. I’d also put some beach chairs and umbrellas out front so you could get drinks while you lay out on the beach. You could have music and even do a little nightclub on the beach. It would be a gold mine.
Who or what inspires you?
Passion, people chasing their dreams and people who achieve the impossible against all odds. It happens a lot and every time I hear about it, it reminds me we really can do anything we put our minds to.
If you hosted a dinner party for eight, whom (living or deceased) would you invite?
Mother Teresa, Richard Branson, Alexander The Great, Dali, Gandhi, John D. Rockefeller, President Obama, and Jesus.
What are you currently reading?
“Ready, Fire, Aim” - It’s about how to grow a company from zero to $100 million.
What is your most prized possession?
My new puppy.
What do you do for fun?
Hang out with my girlfriend and friends, surf, snowboard, jet ski, and play tennis, racquetball and soccer.
Describe your greatest accomplishment
Being able to grow and sell a business while maintaining meaningful loving relationships. It’s hard to do both at the same time.
What is your motto or philosophy of life?
It’s about the journey not the destination. Savor every moment.
