The TPHS Falcons head into the San Diego Section Div. I playoffs

Football:

Torrey Pines came within two minutes of a completing a perfect regular season.

The previously unbeaten Falcons had to settle for almost perfect after losing to La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad 24-21 in a Nov. 12 regular season finale for both teams. The Mavericks scored the game winning touchdown with just under two minutes remaining in the game.

The Falcons, who earlier this month clinched a Palomar League title, fell to 9-1 overall for the season heading into the San Diego Section Div. I playoffs.

The Falcons are the No. 2 seed and have a first-round bye. They will play host to the winner of a Nov. 19 first-round game between San Pasqual of Escondido and Carlsbad on Nov. 26 in the quarterfinals.

John Wilson rushed for 108 yards and one touchdown to lead the Falcons, and Kevin Cuff contributed 88 rushing yards and one touchdown on 11 carries.

Falcons quarterback John Cabot was 7-for-13 passing for 66 yards with one interception, and had one rushing touchdown.

Torrey Pines led 21-17 late in the game, but LCC scored the game winning touchdown with 1:55 left when Garrett Krstich completed a 5-yard scoring pass to Nick Frausto, effectively ending the Falcons bid at perfection.


Cathedral Catholic had a chance to win the Eastern League title outright, but the Dons had to settle for a draw after a tough 28-21 league loss to St. Augustine of San Diego on Nov. 12.

The Dons fell to 4-1 in league and 5-5 overall for the season.

The Dons, who are three-time defending San Diego Section Div. III champions, are the No. 3 seed and have a first-round bye. They will play host to the winner of a Nov. 19 first- round game between El Capitan of Lakeside and Southwest of San Diego on Nov. 26.

Jonny Martin rushed for 146 yards on 28 carries to lead the Dons, and quarterback Garrett Bogart completed four of seven pass attempts for 96 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

The Dons trailed 21-0 late in the first half when Martin scored on a 15-yard run that started a spirited comeback.

Bogart scored on a 26-yard run late in the third quarter, and completed a 14-yard scoring pass to Chance Early midway through the fourth quarter to close the Dons to within 28-21.


Santa Fe Christian concluded its regular season with a 24-20 Coastal League loss Horizon of San Diego on Nov. 12.

The Eagles, who fell to 2-2 in league and 6-4 overall for the season, are seeded No. 4 in the Div. IV playoffs. They have a first-round bye and will play host to the winner of a Nov. 19 first-round game between Escondido Charter and Coronado on Nov. 26.

Josh Estill rushed for 87 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries and Jarrod Watson-Lewis rushed for 82 yards and one touchdown on five carries to lead the Eagles.

Eagles quarterback Connor Moore was 3-for-7 passing for 43 yards and rushed for 38 yards on nine carries.

Matt Kirwan kicked two field goals for the Eagles, from 29 and 28 yards out.

Estill led the Eagles defensively with 11 tackles.


San Diego Jewish Academy concluded its season with a 42-27 Southern League loss to San Pasqual Academy of Escondido on Nov. 10.

The Lions fell to 1-4-1 in league and 2-5-1 overall for the season.

Bruno Garcia-Jed rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries and Jeremy Danzig rushed for 102 yards on eight carries to lead the Lions.

Lions quarterback Micah Weinstein was 12-for-22 passing for 251 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

SDJA receiver Jordan Sharf caught five passes for 134 yards with one touchdown.

Devin Weinstein led the Lions defensively with 15 tackles, and Jake Posnock contributed 12 tackles.

Volleyball:

Canyon Crest Academy defeated Our Lady of the Peace 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-19) in a San Diego Section Div. III first-round playoff game on Nov. 13.

Samantha Cash had 15 kills to lead the Ravens, who improved to 30-6 overall for the season.


Cathedral Catholic defeated Brawley 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-23) in a first-round Div. III playoff game.

Taylor Milton had 14 kills to lead the Dons, and Morgan Cormier and Krissy Witous each added 10 kills.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 26-8.


Torrey Pines defeated San Pasqual 3-1 (25-9, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13) in a Div. I playoff game on Nov. 13.

Jennie Frager had 17 kills to lead the Falcons, and Reily Bueschler added 14 kills.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 14-11.

Golf:

Torrey Pines placed second at the Southern California regional championship match at Country Club of Rancho California on Nov. 10.

The Falcons shot a combined 374 on the 18-hole par-72 course, finishing two strokes behind three-time state champion Torrance.

The Falcons were among the top three teams from the south to advance to the Nov. 16 state title match at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga.

Hee-Wook Choi shot a 69 to lead the Falcons, and Minja Luo contributed a 72 score.


Cathedral Catholic’s Joyce Kim shot a 72, one stroke short of qualifying for the state tournament playoff with two others who shot a 71. The top six individuals on non-qualifying teams advanced to the state tournament.

Field hockey:

Canyon Crest Academy defeated San Marcos 4-0 in a Div. II first-round game on Nov. 13.

Jodi Helsel scored one goal and had two assists to lead the Ravens, and Natalie Yahnke contributed one goal and one assist.

Ravens goalie Clara Belitz had two saves.

The Ravens improved to 15-8 overall for the season.
