Cathedral Catholic High claimed a moral victory last season in a three-point loss to Carlsbad, which at the time had a 23-game winning streak and was considered one of the best programs in the state.

In their more recent meeting, they claimed a victory that was actually supported by the scoreboard as senior sensation Tyler Gaffney led the Dons to a 30-13 Sept. 26 thrashing of the longtime area football titans.

Gaffney rushed for 197 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries as the Dons improved their overall record to 3-0. The defending San Diego Section Div. III champions extended their winning streak going back to last year to 10 games.

Dons quarterback Parker Hipp completed 10 of 15 passes for 156 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions.

Hipp connected with Dons receiver Chance Early on a 36-yard scoring strike that set the tone for the victory.

San Diego Jewish Academy continued its stunning turnaround as senior standout Hunter Spiegel led the freelance Lions to a 54-6 romp over St. Joseph of San Marcos in a Sept. 25 game non-league game that was called after three quarters.

The Lions, who hadn’t won a game going into this season since 2006, improved to 3-0 overall and have outscored their opponents 172-68. Last season SDJA was outscored 229-44 in a 0-5 campaign.

Spiegel rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries, including a 64-yard scoring run to spearhead the victory.

Ilan Bielas rushed for 91 yards on 10 carries and Rafi Lurie caught two passes for 46 yards for SDJA.

Lions quarterback Yosef Mizrachi completed 3 of 5 pass attempts for 81 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Torrey Pines took an early lead but was unable to hang on as the Falcons suffered their second straight heartbreaker, a tough 18-14 non-league loss to Poway Sept. 26.

The Falcons were coming off a 24-21 loss to Rancho Bernardo decided by a last second field goal on Sept. 19. Their most recent loss dropped their overall record to 1-3.

The Falcons backfield trio of Brock Ringo, Robert Murray and Lenny Magill combined for 220 yards.

Murray rushed for 90 yards on 16 carries, Ringo gained 84 yards on six carries, and Magill carried the ball five times for 46 yards.

The Falcons took an early lead in the first quarter on Ringo’s scoring run from the 26.

They trailed 10-7 in the third quarter when Magill scored on a 10-yard run that gave Torrey Pines a 14-10 lead, but a Poway scored on a touchdown and a safety in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Westview improved to 3-0 to start the season, thrashing University City of San Diego 59-13 in a non-league game on Sept. 26.

Westview quarterback Tommy Hansen completed 23 of 28 pass attempts for 292 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Steven Sousa caught six passes for 133 yards including a 55-yard touchdown grab, and Mitchel Bartolo, caught seven passes for 78 yards.

Volleyball

Cathedral Catholic took fifth place at the prestigious Archbishop Mitty of San Jose tournament on Sept. 27.

The Dons came from behind to defeat Clovis West (near Fresno) 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 11-25, 25-23, 15-13) in the fifth place game they trailed 2-1.

Kelly Reeves had 27 kills and Lexi Williamson added 15 kills as the Dons improved to 13-3 overall. Dons setter Rachel Oemcke had 29 assists.

Earlier in the day, the Dons defeated Sacred Heart Prep of Atherton (near Palo Alto) 3-1 (26-24, 26-24, 24-26, 25-18).

Reeves had 19 kills to lead the Dons, Taylor Milton added 17 kills, and Oemcke had 26 assists.

Golf

Torrey Pines won for the sixth time in seven matches to start the season as the Falcons defeated Francis Parker of San Diego 203-213 in a non-league match on Sept. 24.

Sarah Baek shot a one-under-par 35 to lead the Falcons at Riverwalk Golf Course of San Diego.

Venessa Chap shot a 39 for Torrey Pines, and Rae Chung contributed a 41 score.

Joyce Kim and Devon Brown each shot a 37 to lead Cathedral Catholic to a 214-291 non-league victory over La Jolla on Sept. 24.

The Dons won for the fourth time in six matches to even their record at 4-4.

Cross country

Torrey Pines standout Megan Morgan placed fourth at the prestigious Stanford Invitational meet on Sept. 27.

Morgan ran the rugged 3.2-mile course in 18 minutes and 10 seconds.

Falcons teammate Alli Billmeyer placed 10th, clocking an 18:43 finish.

On the boys’ side, Torrey Pines’ Dillon Jack placed 16h overall with a 16:12.
