Torrey Pines golf leads league
Despite brand new coaching staff and a varsity team heavy on freshmen and slim on seniors and juniors, the Torrey Pines High School golf team is leading their league so far this season.
An unprecedented number of athletes tried out for the team this year and the resulting team has been posting stellar results. Sophomores Jay Hwang and Michel Kim each posted a one under par score on the first match of the season, with the team posting an impressive 180.
New head coach Jay Pearlman and new assistant coach Chris Drake have assembled a varsity team with a record number of freshman, as well as the seasoned returnees.
Twenty-six matches and two invitational high school tournaments have been scheduled for the season.
The Falcons’ home courses are Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club and Fairbanks Ranch Country Club, both challenging but spectacular courses.
Seniors on the team are Lance Bagby, Jonathon Fuller and David Sztrom. Juniors include David Smith and Alex Wagner. Sophomores are Jay Hwang, Chris Kim, Michael Kim, Michael Koeneke, James Stafford and Carson Torchia. Freshmen are Andrew Burgess, Ryan Burgess, Kyle Lawrence and Eric Peng.
Most of the team members are already prominent in state and nationwide junior golf tours. Most play on the San Diego Junior Golf Tour, California Junior Tour, Southern California PGA Junior Tour, International Junior Golf Association Tour, or American Junior Golf Association Tour and many are highly ranked players already.
Several have competed in the prestigious Callaway Junior World Tournament and Toyota Tour Cup.
Varsity golf is a CIF Statewide Tournament sport, with state tournaments held June 10 in Pebble Beach at Poppy Hills Golf Course. TPHS golf has won four state championships and 22 League championships. The team is going all out this season with an eye towards those championships.
