Training halted after hole found on Del Mar track

Only hours after the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s 71st season of horse began, training had to be halted due to a hole in track’s surface.

But track officials said they expected repairs to be made before the start of today’s races at 2 p.m., according to signonsandiego.com

On Wednesday, the season took off with the traditional showiness, a victory by the Twirling Candy, the largest crowd in Del Mar History — and of course the “One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest.’’ A total of 45,309 came through the turnstyles.

Hats took center stage before post time as men and women donned headgear in hopes of capturing the title as the most glamorous and the funniest/most outrageous, as well as the headgear with the best racing theme and the best fresh flowers.
