TV star Jack Wagner wins Drew Brees golf classic
Actor Jack Wagner won the 2010 Cox Celebrity Championship Sunday afternoon at the par 71 Morgan Run Resort & Club in Rancho Santa Fe. Wagner shot a minus two overall for the 36-hole competition — plus two Sunday in windy conditions, following a four under par round Saturday.
Sunday’s win marks Wagner’s first win in the San Diego-based event on the 6,750-yard course. This weekend Wagner played in his 11th tournament in 12 years.
Five-time tournament champion and former MLB pitcher Rick Rhoden finished one stroke back (minus one overall; three under Saturday, plus two Sunday). Wagner and Rhoden were the only two players to finish the entire 36 holes under par.
MLB alumni Mickey Tettleton and former NHL hockey star Dan Quinn tied for third at plus two overall. Hockey great Jeremy Roenick finished alone in fifth, carding a plus three for the tourney.
San Diego State University product Marshall Faulk finished sixth overall at plus four. There was a three-way tie for seventh place at plus five between 2009 champion and former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer, former NBA All-Star Jack Marin — the 2009 tournament champion, and former MLB All-Star Shane Rawley.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo finished alone in 10th place after his tournament debut at plus six.
“The Drew Brees Celebrity Championship should be renamed the ‘Drew Windy Championship,’ ” said Wagner. “It was a tough day with tough conditions. Gratefully, the last put dribbled in.”
