Union Tribune eliminates 192 positions

The San Diego Union-Tribune announced Thursday it is eliminating 192 positions, including a number of newsroom jobs, as part of a post-sale restructuring.

The layoff announcement comes three days after completion of the sale of

the Union-Tribune to Beverly Hills-based Platinum Equity.

“These are difficult times for the entire newspaper industry, and a time of transition for the Union-Tribune,’’ said Drew Schlosberg, the newspaper’s director of community and public relations. “Any decision to reduce staff is painful, as it means saying goodbye to longtime friends and exceptionally talented colleagues.’’

The layoffs, which will be effective July 6, cut across all departments, according to the statement from the newspaper. Affected employees were notified today by senior management.

Those laid off will receive transition assistance and employee termination benefits once they leave the company, according to the Union-Tribune statement.

Amid declining advertisement revenues in recent years, the Union-Tribune had already significantly trimmed its workforce through previous rounds of layoffs and buyouts.
