Baseball:
Cathedral Catholic started out slow but finished strong.
And it was the finish that mattered most as the Dons went on to win the Lions tournament despite losing the first game.
The Dons defeated El Capitan 4-1 in the championship game on April 5. They advanced to the finals after beating Torrey Pines 5-4 in a semifinal earlier in the day.
The Dons, who won their second tournament title in the span of a week (they won the City tournament on March 31), opened the Lions tournament with a 4-0 loss to Bullard of Fresno on April 2.
But they bounced back with a 3-2 victory over Rancho Bernardo on April 3 and a 4-3 win against Helix the next day.
German Sugiura pitched a four-hitter, striking out three batters and allowing one walk to lead the Dons in the title game.
Evan Cassolato had two hits and one RBI and scored two runs to lead the Dons offensively, and Hayden Grant had two RBI.
Matt Boermeester had three hits to lead the Dons against Torrey Pines, and Cassolato added two hits and two RBI.
The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 14-3 as they won for the 10th time in 11 games.
Torrey Pines advanced to the semifinals after defeating El Camino Real of Woodland Hills (Los Angeles County) 3-1 the previous day.
The Falcons opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Grossmont on April 2 and then beat Montgomery 6-2 the next day.
Michael Mullen had three hits including a double to lead the Falcons offensively in the ECR game and Morgan Oliver added two doubles and an RBI.
Ryan Zehner pitched a three-hitter for Torrey Pines, striking out seven batters and allowing one walk.
Luc Rennie allowed one run on seven hits to lead the Falcons in the Grossmont game. He struck out eight batters and allowed no walks.
Cory Rodriguez and Kyle Johnson each had two hits to lead the Falcons offensively.
Oliver homered and had three RBI to lead the Falcons in the Montgomery game, and Rennie, Rodriguez and Jake Mitchell each contributed two hits.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 12-2-1.
Santa Fe Christian lost to Monte Vista 12-4 in a Lions tournament game on April 4 despite a great game from Graham Gomez, who had two hits including a homer and two RBI.
John Gamble added two hits.
The loss followed a 2-0 victory over Patrick Henry two days.
Bobby Zarubin pitched a three-hitter in which he struck out eight batters and allowed three walks.
Gomez and Troy Zarubin each had one hit and one RBI to lead the Eagles offensively.
The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 12-4.
Softball:
Torrey Pines lost to West Hills 1-0 in the Falcon Fiesta tournament on April 7.
The Falcons were held to five hits as they were shut-out for just the second time this season - their only two losses.
The Falcons advanced to the finals after defeating Granite Hills 4-3 on April 2 and Vista 10-0 two days later.
Julia Yacker had two hits including a double and drove in a run to lead the Falcons in the Granite Hills game.
Kaitlin Schreiber had three hits including a home run and four RBI and Kelsey Buchanan had three hits with a double and homer and three RBI to lead the Falcons in the Vista game.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 18-2.
Santa Fe Christian improved to 2-0 in Coastal League play after an 8-3 victory over Bishop’s on April 4.
The Eagles improved to 2-1 in league and 7-5 overall for the season.
Cathedral Catholic defeated Banning 4-2 in a nonleague Las Vegas tournament game on April 2.
Vanessa Jimenez had two hits and Neolani Boyer homered to lead the Dons offensively.
Sarah Beyer struck out two batters and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and no walks for the win.
The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 5-5.
Golf:
Torrey Pines defeated San Dieguito Academy 200-261 in a nonleague match on April 4.
Sam Wu shot a 2-over-par 38 to lead the Falcons on a nine-hole course at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. Andrew Burgess added a 39 score and Jonah Holty and Austin Vincent each contributed 40 scores.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 23-1.
Canyon Crest Academy defeated Del Norte 206-239 in a Coastal League match on April 4.
Matt McKinney shot a 3-over-par 39 to lead the Ravens on a nine-hole course at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club.
Reed Gilbrech added a 40 score.
The Ravens improved to 4-0 in league and 7-2 overall for the season.
Girls lacrosse:
Santa Fe Christian defeated San Dieguito Academy 14-5 in a nonleague game on April 6.
Kayla Stryjewski and Julia Minch each scored five goals to lead the Eagles and goalie Tory Freter had four saves.
The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 10-3.
