Cathedral Catholic marked the return of standout quarterback Garrett Bogart with a decisive 52-10 victory over Scripps Ranch in an Eastern League opener on Oct. 5.

Bogart, who missed two games with a wrist injury, completed seven of nine pass attempts for 156 yards in his return.

Tony Johnson rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries to lead the Dons.

Johnson had a 32-yard scoring run in a decisive second quarter in which the Dons outscored their opponent 21-0 to open up a 35-3 lead.

Chris Moliga rushed for 76 yards on five carries including a 31-yard scoring run that also came in the second quarter.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 4-2.

Torrey Pines lost to Poway 35-0 in a Palomar League opener on Oct. 5.

The Falcons’ streak of nine straight quarters in which it hadn’t allowed a touchdown ended in the first quarter, and Poway opened up a 28-0 lead by the end of the first half.

Chase Pickwell rushed for 50 yards on 13 carries to lead the Falcons and Mark Detrow gained 40 yards on six carries.

The Falcons overall record for the season fell to 3-3.

Santa Fe Christian opened Coastal League play with a 27-7 victory over Horizon.

Tony Miro rushed for 126 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries to lead the Eagles.

Eagles quarterback Hunter Vaccaro rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

SFC’s rolled up 304 yards of total offense, with the Eagles ground game carrying almost the entire load.

Vaccaro attempted just two passes on the day. His only completion was a 7-yarder to Troy Zarubin.

Zarubin had five tackles and three sacks to lead the Eagles defensively.

Darrian Borboa led the Eagles with seven tackles and Cole Needham added five.

The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 3-3.

San Diego Jewish Academy lost to Tri-City Christian 48-7 in a Pacific League game on Oct. 4.

The Lions fell to 0-2 in league and 0-4 overall for the season.


Canyon Crest Academy’s entry into the Palomar League presents formidable challenges, with the Ravens facing tougher San Diego Section Division I opponents.

The Ravens seem to be rising to the occasion.

They rallied from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Poway 3-2 (22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 17-15) in a league game on Oct. 5 for their fourth straight victory overall.

Senior standout Delaney Sullivan had 27 kills to lead the Ravens and Micaela Miner added 12 kills.

Setters Carly Rasmussen and Miranda Beach contributed 24 and 22 assists, respectively.

The victory followed a 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 28-30, 25-18 ) league win against Westview two days earlier.

Caterina Rosander led the Ravens with 16 kills and Sullivan and Miner each added 13 kills.

Rasmussen had 29 assists and Beach added 24.

The Ravens improved to 2-1 in league and 14-6 overall for the season.

Torrey Pines defeated Poway 3-1(25-16, 25-19, 27-29, 25-16) in a Palomar League match on Oct. 3.

Reily Buechler had 18 kills to lead the Falcons.

The Falcons improved to 2-0 in league and 12-1 overall for the season.

Santa Fe Christian defeated La Jolla Country Day 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-17) in a Coastal League match on Oct. 3.

Hannah Hubbard and Alexandra Johnson each had 13 kills to lead the Eagles and Christie Duoos contributed 34 assists.

The Eagles improved to 2-0 in league and 11-3 overall for the season.


Torrey Pines defeated Poway 194-228 in a Palomar League match on Oct. 4.

Minjia Luo shot a one-under-par 35 to lead the Falcons on a nine-hole course at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.

Georgia Lacey contributed a 38 score and Grace Busby added a 39 score.

The Falcons improved to 6-0 in league and 13-0 overall for the season.

Water polo:

Torrey Pines defeated Mt. Carmel 10-7 in a Palomar League game on Oct. 3.

Trevor Colbert had four goals to lead the Falcons and Sam Gorcey-Biblowitz had two assists.

Falcons goalie Layne Moore had 10 saves.

Cathedral Catholic defeated Coronado 11-9 in a Western League game on Oct. 3.

Cody Smith scored four goals to lead the Dons and Jordan Colina added three goals.

Grant Curry contributed three assists, and Falcons goalie Joe Cleary had six saves.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 12-2.

Canyon Crest Academy lost to Rancho Buena Vista 12-0 in a nonleague game on Oct. 4.

Jerry Guess and John Guess each scored three goals in defeat for the Ravens.

Field hockey:

Canyon Crest Academy extended its season opening winning streak to 15 games as the Ravens defeated Westview 1-0 in a Palomar league opener on Oct. 4.

Katie Carlson scored the game’s only goal off an assist from Gabby Depetro. Ravens goalie Clara Belitz had two saves.
