WEEK IN SPORTS: Falcons find their way

Torrey Pines was for a time in unfamiliar territory, but the Falcons soon found their way home.

Torrey Pines trailed in a game for the first time this season, but the Falcons remained unbeaten as they rallied to defeat Rancho Bernardo 20-13 in an Avocado League game on Oct. 22.

The Falcons improved to 2-0 in league and 7-0 overall for the season.

The Falcons rushing tandem of John Wilson and Kevin Cuff combined for 185 yards and three touchdowns, and quarterback John Cabot was 10-for-17 passing for 78 yards with no interceptions.

Wilson rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, and Cuff gained 89 yards and scored one touchdown on 15 carries.

The Falcons took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Wilson’s scoring run from the 7, but trailed 10-7 at halftime.

They regained the lead in the third quarter on Cuff’s scoring run from the 6, which made it 13-6, and then stretched their lead to 20-6 on Wilson’s scoring run from the 5.

Cathedral Catholic took its lumps to start the season playing some pretty tough nonleague opponents, but the Dons have since made up for lost time.

The Dons won for the third time in four games, 31-15 against Lincoln of San Diego in an Eastern League game on Oct. 22.

The Dons improved to 2-0 in league and 3-4 overall for the season.

Running back Jonny Martin led the Dons, rushing for 198 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries.

Szongaia Brown rushed for 84 yards on nine carries, and Theo Hardson rushed for 40 yards on three carries.

The Dons took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter when Martin scored on a run from the 5, and Jacob Roman kicked a 25-yard field goal shortly afterwards.

Lincoln closed to within 10-8 midway through the second quarter, but the Dons answered with 21 unanswered points on Martin’s scoring runs from 42, 6 and the 45 yards out.

San Diego Jewish Academy defeated previously unbeaten Ocean View Christian 34-32 in a nonleague game on Oct. 21.

The Lions improved to 2-2-1 overall for the season as they snapped OVC’s six-game winning streak to start the season.

Volleyball:

Canyon Crest Academy defeated Del Norte of San Diego 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-18) in a Valley League game on Oct. 21.

Samantha Cash had 14 kills and Aline Valiengo added seven kills to lead the Ravens.

Ravens setter Kyana Miller had 23 assists and four aces, and Valiengo contributed 17 assists.

The Ravens improved to 5-0 in league and 26-6 overall for the season.

Cross country:

Torrey Pines standout Alli Billmeyer placed third in the prestigious Mount SAC Invitational Div. I sweepstakes race on Oct. 3 at Mount San Antonio College of Walnut.

Billmeyer clocked a 17:08 on the rugged 5K course, finishing 27 seconds behind Simi Valley High sensation Sarah Baxter, who ran the course in a stunning 16:41.

On the boys’ side, Torrey Pines placed first in the Div. I team competition behind Matt Carpowich, who placed fourth in the sweepstakes race, clocking a 14:40.

Trent Newquist (15:30) Arjun Kumar (15:54) and Andrew Eckberg (16:08) placed 26th, 43rd, and 61st, respectively for Torrey Pines.

Water polo:

Torrey Pines defeated Rancho Bernardo 13-10 in a Palomar League game on Oct. 22.

The victory followed a 13-10 league win against Westview the previous day.

Austin Carr had three goals to lead the Falcons in the Rancho Bernardo game and David Dallas-Orr, Patrick Lenihan and Dustin Inada each added two goals.

Falcons goalie Layne Moore recorded seven saves.

Lenihan had four goals and Jeff Francis and Denis Vaisberg each added three goals to lead the Falcons in the Westview game.

Moore had 11 saves.

The Falcons improved to 6-1 I league and 12-7 overall for the season.

Field hockey:

Cathedral Catholic defeated Point Loma of San Diego 4-0 in a Western League game on Oct. 22.

Skylar Brown, Amy Sears, Kaitlin Gibson and Lauren Duran each scored one goal to lead the Dons, who improved to 2-0 in league and 6-5 overall for the season.

Torrey Pines defeated Westview 4-0 in a Palomar League game on Oct. 21.

Caroline Boucher scored two goals to lead the Falcons, and Dana Manheim added one goal and one assist.

Falcons goalie Erica Cohen had two saves.

The Falcons improved to 4-0 in league and 14-2 overall for the season.

Canyon Crest Academy defeated Orange Glen 7-0 in a Valley League game on Oct. 21.

Natalie Hoffman scored three goals and had two assists to lead the Ravens, who improved to 5-2 in league and 12-6 overall for the season.

Golf:

Torrey Pines defeated Rancho Bernardo 196-221 in a Palomar League match on Oct. 19.

Sandy Choi shot a 1-under-par 35 to lead the Falcons on a nine-hole course at Bernardo Heights Country Club.

Jennifer Peng and Vanessa Chap contributed 37 and 40 scores, respectively.
