Week in Sports: Falcons snap losing streak with 42-0 win


- Torrey Pines coach Scott Ashby believes the effort has been there since Day 1.

Those efforts finally produced results, as the Falcons snapped a three-game winless streak with a 42-0 trouncing of Poway in a nonleague game on Sept. 25.

“Our kids have worked really hard all year and I think they’re coming around and starting to execute,” Ashby said.

Running back John Wilson rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns to lead the romp, and Falcons quarterback John Cabot threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns, both to Ryan Rodas.

The Falcons broke the game open early, with Cabot sparking a 21-0 first quarter with a 16-yard scoring pass to Rodas midway through the quarter to give the Falcons an early 7-0 lead. Wilson scored on a 34-yard run minutes later to make 14-0, and the Falcons stretched their lead to 21-0 when John Driscoll scored on a 40-yard run at the end of the quarter.

  • Cathedral Catholic’s sluggish start didn’t last long.

The Dons remained unbeaten through four games and extended their winning streak to 25 games with a 38-7 dismantling of Carlsbad in a nonleague game on Sept. 25.
The Dons led 3-0 in the first quarter on John Wells’ 21-yard field goal.

The Dons stretched their lead to 17-0 in the second quarter, when quarterback Max Brewer completed touchdown passes to Derek Thomas and Chance Early from 17 and 70 yards out, respectively.

Jonny Martin scored on a two-yard run early in the third quarter to make it 24-0.

Brewer completed a 28-yard scoring pass to Corrie Garcia and then another scoring pass to J.J. Stavola from the 1 to put the game out of reach.

- Santa Fe Christian continued its torrid start with a 24-13 nonleague victory over Grossmont of El Cajon on Sept. 26.

The Eagles improved to 4-0 overall for the season under first-year coach Nick Ruscetta.

Sam Hoekstra rushed for 162 yards on 12 carries highlighted by an 80-yard scoring scamper midway through the second quarter that broke a scoreless tie.

Keaton Giannotti rushed for 74 yards on seven carries and Trent Von Yokes rushed for 63 yards on seven carries.

Jared Watson-Lewis and Trevor Boucher each had eight tackles to lead the Eagles defensively, and Kurt Luedtke contributed seven tackles.

Von Yokes scored on a 17-yard run late in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead going into the intermission.

Grossmont scored late in the third quarter to make it 14-7, but the Eagles answered with Watson-Lewis scoring from the 9 and Matt Kirwan kicking in a 32-yard field goal that stretched the lead to 24-7.

- San Diego Jewish Academy is making the transition to 11-man football look easy.

The Lions, who until this season played the 8-man game since their program’s inception earlier this decade, defeated Julian 27-14 in a pivotal Southern League game on Sept. 24.

The Lions improved to 3-0 overall for the season and 2-0 in league.

Lions quarterback Joseph Mizrachi completed nine of 14 pass attempts for 159 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, and rushed for 85 yards on seven carries.

Jordan Sharf led the Lions ground game, rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.

Sharf also caught four passes for 55 yards and Rafi Lurie caught three passes for 40 yards.

Ricky Pemensky led the Lions defensively with 10 tackles and three sacks, and Drew Ferris contributed eight tackles.


Canyon Crest Academy defeated Point Loma of San Diego 3-1 (25-17, 14-25, 25-13, 25-14) in a nonleague match on Sept. 24.

Samantha Cash had 20 kills to lead the Ravens, who improved their overall record for the season to 2-2. Ravens setter Kyana Miller recorded 39 assists. Cash and Jenn Djavaherian each had seven aces, and Avery Anton had five aces.

Cathedral Catholic defeated Bishop’s of La Jolla 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-21) in a nonleague match on Sept. 22. The Dons pushed their overall record for the season to 8-2.

Kelly Reeves had 15 kills and 17 digs to lead the Dons, and Taylor Milton added 11 kills and five blocks. Setter Lauren Miller had 18 assists.

Red-hot San Diego Jewish Academy improved to 9-0 to start the season as the Lions trounced Midway Baptist of San Diego 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-8) in a nonleague game on Sept. 23.

Aliya Luther had seven aces and two kills and MacKenzie Norman had six aces and three kills to lead the Lions.

Cross country

Torrey Pines’ girls’ team won the Stanford Invitational meet on Sept. 26, with three Falcons runners placing among the top six runners.

Megan Morgan placed second, clocking a 17:39 time on the grueling 3.1 mile course.

Alli Billmeyer (18:10) placed third, and Ashlyn Dadhkah (18:16) placed sixth.
