Boys basketball:

Torrey Pines opened the prestigious West Hills tournament with five straight wins, but the Falcons couldn’t close the deal in the finals.

They experienced a 60-55 loss to St. Augustine in the championship game on Dec. 14.

The Falcons advanced to the finals after two big wins earlier in the week. They trounced Patrick Henry 82-31 on Dec. 9 and beat Cathedral Catholic 64-52 four days later.

Brandon Cyrus scored 22 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Falcons in the St. Augustine game.

Zach Wagner contributed 11 points, six assists and three steals.

The Falcons led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter, but St. Augustine opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer.

The Falcons would never recapture that lead.

The two teams were locked in a 23-23 tie late in the second quarter when St. Augustine went on a 9-2 run to take a 32-25 lead midway through the third quarter. The Saints stretched the lead to 42-33 early in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons went on a 10-2 run that Cyrus capped with a 3-pointer that made it 44-43 midway through the fourth quarter, but St. Augustine pulled away at the end.

Cyrus and Dominic Hovasse each scored 15 points to lead the Falcons in the Patrick Henry game and Sam Worman scored 23 points to lead them against Cathedral Catholic.

Cameron Moore, Simon Lu and Kevin McNeela each scored 11 points to lead the Cathedral Catholic.

The Dons were coming off a 60-38 victory over Christian.

Reid Johnson scored 18 points to lead the Dons and Cameron Moore added 13 points.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 5-1.

The Dons improved to 3-2.

San Diego Jewish Academy put together an impressive run in the Bout of the South tournament, but in the end the Lions couldn’t deliver the knockout blow.

The Lions had their season-opening winning streak snapped at seven games as they lost to El Cajon Valley 73-47 on Dec. 14.

The Lions were playing for a sixth straight day in a tournament they opened with a 57-21 win against Holtville on Dec. 9.

They also beat Preuss UCSD 49-26, High Tech San Diego 49-31, High Tech Chula Vista 67-38 and Lutheran 64-54.

The Lions improved their overall record for the season to 7-1.

Santa Fe Christian closed out the tough Wolf Pack tournament with two straight wins.

The Eagles defeated Serra 59-49 in the Dec. 14 finale. That win followed a 54-38 victory over Scripps Ranch 54-38 four days earlier.

Brian Finley scored 30 points to lead the Eagles in the Serra game.

Jack Langborg added 13 points.

Finley scored 20 points and Langborg added nine points to lead the Eagles in the Scripps Ranch game.

The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 3-2.

Girls basketball:

Canyon Crest Academy’s Ally Deremer may just be a freshman, but she’s already making her minutes count.

Deremer made a statement in her varsity debut as she had a triple-double to help lead the Ravens to a 55-37 nonleague victory over Francis Parker in their season opener on Dec. 13.

Nicolee Quraishy led the Ravens with 18 points and Grace Weinzettle added 12 points.

Deremer scored 11 points and contributed 12 steals and 10 assists.

Torrey Pines lost to Bishop’s 83-40 in a Matador Classic tournament game on Dec. 11.

Sierra Campisano scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Falcons and Christina Ellis added 10 points.

Campisano has had double-doubles in all five of her team’s games this year.

The Falcons fell to 2-3 overall for the season.

Girls soccer:

Just two weeks into its season, Torrey Pines already has a five-game winning streak and a tournament championship under its belt.

The Falcons won the Butch Lee Memorial tournament with a 2-1 victory over La Costa Canyon in the finals on Dec. 14.

Catarina Macario scored two goals and Alli Casella had one assist to lead the Falcons.

The victory followed a 5-1 win against Westview in the semifinals earlier in the day.

Macario and Camelia Tirandazi each scored two goals to lead the Falcons and Natalie Saddic added one goal.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 5-0.

Host Cathedral Catholic defeated Mater Dei of Santa Ana 6-1 in a Butch Lee Memorial tournament game on Dec. 13.

Jessica Clegg scored two goals to lead the Dons and Mattie Hegardt added one goal and one assist.

Sunny Dunphy, Tamara Gomez and Audrey Hegardt each contributed one goal.

Dons goalie Hanna Macaulay had four saves.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 2-0-1.

Boys soccer:

Torrey Pines defeated San Dieguito Academy in a Grossmont tournament game on Dec. 14.

Tyler Valdes broke a scoreless deadlock with the game’s only goal in the second half.

Patrick Koeneke and Jack Sampiere combined for the shutout.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 1-1-2.
