Torrey Pines won its second consecutive San Diego Section Division I title as senior standout Rachel Nasland pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Falcons to a 1-0 victory over Carlsbad on May 25.
The title game was a rematch of both last year’s Division I championship game and a winner’s bracket semifinal two days earlier the Falcons lost 3-2.
Nasland struck out eight batters and allowed one walk.
Shelbianne Evans had one of just two Falcons hits in the game and drove in their only run.
The Falcons advanced to the finals after defeating Poway 8-0 on May 23.
Emma Wong and Evans each had two hits to lead the Falcons and Julia Yacker had one hit and three RBI.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 21-9-2.
Cathedral Catholic lost to Santana 4-2 in the Division III title game on May 25.
Freshman Devyn Magnett pitched well in defeat for the Dons in the title game. She allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk.
The Dons advanced to the finals out of the loser’s bracket, defeating Del Norte 3-2 on May 21 and then Our Lady of the Peace 8-3 and El Capitan 2-0 (both games were on May 23).
Magnett struck out four batters and allowed two runs (both unearned) on five hits and no walks to lead the Dons in the Del Norte game.
Hannah Gilliland and Samantha Gonsalves each had two hits to lead the Dons offensively.
Sarai Niu hit a solo homer and Jessica Alexander doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Dons in the Our Lady of the Peace game and Magnett pitched a five-hit shutout and allowed no walks to lead the Dons against El Capitan.
The Dons won the El Capitan game despite being hitless.
The Dons overall record for the season fell to 23-11-1.
Cathedral Catholic’s perennially dominant program had an early playoff exit as the Dons were knocked out of the double-elimination tournament three games in with a 3-1 loss to Mira Mesa on May 24.
The setback followed a 5-4 playoff loss to Montgomery two days earlier.
They won their opener, 15-3 against El Capitan on May 21.
Sean Bouchard homered and drove in five runs to lead the Dons in the El Capitan game.
Andrew Wilson, Stephen Gonsalves and Giovanni Garbella each added two hits.
Gonsalves pitched five innings for the win. He struck out seven batters and allowed two runs on two hits and three walks.
Connor Larkin homered and drove in four runs to lead the Dons in the Montgomery game.
Brady Aiken pitched well but took the loss in the Mira Mesa game. He struck out seven and allowed two runs on four hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.
The Dons were ranked No. 1 in the nation in a USA Today preseason poll and at or near the top of nearly every reputable national preseason poll, but they struggled after losing several key players to suspensions halfway through the season according to published reports.
The Dons had won Division III titles in each of the last two years and four of the last five years, with five consecutive championship game appearances.
Their overall record for the season fell to 20-12.
Torrey Pines was eliminated from the Division I playoffs after a 10-4 loss to La Costa Canyon on May 24.
The defeat followed a 9-2 playoff loss to Granite Hills two days earlier.
Cole Jaczko had three hits to lead the Falcons in the Granite Hills game and Henry Grow added two hits.
John Remick had two hits to lead the Falcons against LCC and Matthew Mullen had one hit and drove in two runs.
The Falcons fell to 13-9 overall for the season.
Canyon Crest Academy was eliminated from the Division III playoffs after a 15-7 loss to Del Norte on May 25 and a 5-3 loss to San Ysidro the previous day.
The losses followed a 12-10 win against Del Norte in the Ravens playoff opener on May 22 and a 5-0 win against Santa Fe Christian the previous day.
Jack Kaloogian pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the Ravens against Santa Fe Christian. Kaloogian struck out five batters and allowed two walks.
Freshman Alex Rejto had three hits and two RBI to lead the Ravens offensively.
Riley Adams and Austin Kay each had two hits and three RBI to lead the Ravens in the first Del Norte game.
Sophomore Dylan Gargas took the loss in the San Ysidro game. He struck out four batters and allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits and one walk.
The Ravens overall record for the season dropped to 13-20.
Torrey Pines won the Open Division championship with a 7-5 victory over La Costa Canyon on May 25.
Bennet Shafer scored three goals to lead the Falcons.
Torrey Pines improved its overall record for the season to 17-3.
