The little engine that could appears to be gathering steam at just the right time.

With the playoffs just around the corner, perennial small-school power Santa Fe Christian solidified its grip on the Coastal League title with a resounding 55-21 league win against La Jolla Country Day on Oct. 25.

The Eagles remained unbeaten in league through three games as they won for the fifth time in six games.

The Eagles did it with a ground game that accounted for the vast majority of the nearly 500 yards of total offense they rolled up.

Tony Miro rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and Cole Needham gained 137 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns on nine carries to lead the Eagles.

Six Eagles players combined for 459 rushing yards and eight scores.

Benton Weeks rushed for 88 yards and one touchdown on six carries and quarterback Jerry Harper rushed for 72 yards and scored twice on four carries.

The Eagles attempted just two passes, with Harper’s 29-yard pass to Miro their only completion on the day.

Nayan Jaitly led the Eagles defensively with 15 tackles and Sam Ray, Darrian Borboa and Needham each contributed seven tackles.

The Eagles improved to 3-0 in league and 6-3 overall for the season.

Torrey Pines overpowered Rancho Bernardo 59-28 in a Palomar League game on Oct. 25 as the torrid Falcons extended their winning streak to six games.

The Falcons broke open a 14-14 tie in the second quarter, when they outscored their opponent 24-0.

They stretched their lead to 52-14 with two more touchdowns in the their quarter to cap a run of 38 unanswered points.

Jack Bailey caught five passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns and also had one of the Falcons three interceptions.

Peter Hollen and Conner Mead each had one interception for Torrey Pines.

The Falcons improved to 3-0 in league and 6-2 overall for the season.

Cathedral Catholic had its four-game winning streak snapped as the Dons experienced a 19-7 loss to St. Augustine in an Eastern League game on Oct. 25.

Chris Moliga rushed for 84 yards one touchdown to lead the Dons offensively.

Dons quarterback Clayton Dale completed 5 of 18 pass attempts for 40 yards with one interception.

The Dons trailed 7-0 early in the second quarter when Moliga scored on a two-yard run to tie the game.

But St. Augustine scored late in the half to take a 13-7 lead into the intermission and padded its lead with 40-yard scoring run late in the third quarter that made it 19-7.

The Dons fell to 3-1 in league and 6-2 overall for the season.

San Diego Jewish Academy defeated Rock Academy 41-21 in a Pacific League game on Oct. 25.

The Lions improved to 2-1 in league and 3-2 overall for the season.


Torrey Pines defeated Canyon Crest Academy 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-20) in a Palomar League match on Oct. 22.

Reily Buechler had 19 kills to lead the Falcons and Savannah Rennie added 11 kills.

Falcons setters Camille Oemcke and Mikaela Duhs contributed 25 and 20 assists, respectively.

Santa Fe Christian defeated Bishop’s 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-22) in a Coastal League South game on Oct. 24.

Lexi Sun had 22 kills to lead the Eagles and Hannah Mathiesen added 12 kills.

Eagles setter Ellie Adamson had 37 assists.

The Eagles improved to 2-4 in league and 9-13 overall for the season.

San Diego Jewish Academy defeated Rock Academy 3-0 (25-7, 25-18, 25-7) in a Pacific League match on Oct. 22.

Madison Spiegel had nine kills to lead the Lions and Sara Chitlik and Shannon Saffer each added eight kills.

Lions setter Savanna Lurie contributed 23 assists.

The Lions improved to 3-2 in league and 11-2 overall for the season.

Water polo:

Santa Fe Christian defeated Point Loma 10-8 in a San Diego Open tournament game on Oct. 25, but the Eagles lost to Valhalla 13-9 in the same tournament later in the day.

Bennett Royce scored seven goals to lead the Eagles in the Point Loma game and goalie Jack Atkinson had 10 saves.

Royce had five goals and two assists and Cullen McGee added three goals to lead the Eagles in the Valhalla game.

Atkinson contributed nine saves.

Field hockey:

Cathedral Catholic lost to Scripps Ranch 1-0 in a Western League game on Oct. 23.

The loss followed a 9-1 trouncing of Point Loma in a league game two days earlier.

Dons goalie Abi Grosse had 13 saves in defeat for the Dons in the Scripps Ranch game.

Megan Larkin scored three goals to lead the Dons against Scripps Ranch.

Kira Williamson added two goals and Madi Kuperman, Shannon Link, Emily Nora and Francesca Federico each contributed one goal.

Grosse had four saves.

The Dons fell to 2-1 in league and 12-10 overall for the season.
