A brutal nonleague schedule that Cathedral Catholic faced in preparation for Western League play may not have seemed like the easiest way to go at the time, but all indications suggest it helped the Dons get ready.
Cathedral Catholic opened league with two wins as the Dons won their fourth and fifth consecutive games overall since coming home from a tough national tournament in North Carolina in which they lost their last three games.
The Dons opened league with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mira Mesa on April 8 that went eight innings. The Dons beat Patrick Henry 5-3 the next day.
Sean Bouchard and Andrew Wilson each had two hits to lead the Dons in the Mira Mesa game.
Dons starter Stephen Gonsalves pitched seven innings of three-hit ball but was not involved in the decision.
Gonsalves struck seven batters and allowed two runs (one earned).
German Sugiura, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Dons, was credited with the victory.
Connor Larkin and Giovanni Garbella each had two hits to lead the Dons in the Patrick Henry game.
Dons starter Michael Martin, who was credited with the win, struck out seven batters and allowed one unearned run on two hits and one walk in four innings.
The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 13-4.
Canyon Crest Academy took two out three games from Westview in a Palomar League-opening series.
Jack Kaloogian allowed one run in a complete game five-hitter and Riley Adams had two hits including a double and scored two runs to lead the Ravens in the April 13 series finale.
Dylan Gargas pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Ravens to a 4-0 win the April 9 series opener.
Austin Kay led the Ravens offensively with two hits and two runs scored and Jacob Gotta contributed one hit and two RBI.
Kaloogian had three hits in defeat for the Ravens in a 10-3 loss to the Wolverines on April 11.
The Ravens improved to 2-1 in league and 7-10 overall for the season.
Santa Fe Christian opened Coastal League South play with two narrow losses to La Jolla Country Day.
The Eagles opened league play with a 3-2 loss to the Torreys on April 10. They experienced a heartbreaking 1-0 loss at the hands of LJCD in a game that went nine innings two days later.
Troy Zarubin and Dean Eliott each had two hits to lead the Eagles in the first game.
Dillon Paulson and Cole Acosta combined on a six-hitter in the second game.
Paulson, who started the game, struck out three batters and allowed three hits and one walk in four innings of shutout ball.
Acosta, who took the loss, gave up the game-winning run with one out in the ninth inning after tossing four scoreless innings.
The Eagles fell to 0-2 in league and 8-10 overall for the season.
Torrey Pines was swept by Rancho Bernardo in a Palomar League-opening three-game series as the Falcons extended their losing streak to nine games.
The Falcons experienced a 12-0 loss in the April 9 opener, before 2-0 and 13-8 setbacks on April 11 and April 13, respectively.
The Falcons fell to 0-3 in league and 5-13 overall for the season.
Santa Fe Christian defeated Carlsbad 10-4 in a nonleague game on April 12.
The victory followed a 15-3 win against La Jolla Country Day in a Coastal League game on April 9.
Paige Stehly had four goals and Brooke Wimsatt added three goals to lead the Eagles in the Carlsbad game.
Eagles goalie Torey Freter contributed 10 saves.
Wimsatt and Julia Mirich each scored three goals to lead the Eagles in the LJCD game and Sarah Mirenda contributed two goals and two assists.
Freter had four saves.
The Eagles improved to 3-0 in league and 9-7 overall for the season.
Canyon Crest Academy defeated Denver East (Denver, Colo.) 19-6 in a nonleague game on April 8.
Nicole Hickman scored six goals and had one assist to lead the Ravens.
Alexa Carter contributed five goals and Paige Weinstein added three goals and three assists.
The Ravens improved their overall record for the season to 7-3.
Ravens goalie Caitlyn Vogt had three saves.

Ricky DeSantis shot a 3-under-par 33 to lead the Dons on a nine-hole course at The Crossings.
Cathedral Catholic defeated Scripps Ranch 3-0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-21) in a Western League match on April 10.
Denis Howell had nine kills to lead the Dons and Patrick Kearney contributed 20 assists.
The Dons improved to 5-1 in league and 6-3 overall for the season.
