Football:

• Perennial small school power

Santa Fe Christian

got off to a bumpy start, but the little engine that could is humming again after a 29-13 over Central in a nonleague game on Sept. 27.

The win was was their second in a row after an 0-3 start.

Eagles quarterback Carter Roberts led an offense that rolled up more than 300 yards on the day.

Roberts completed six of seven pass attempts for 76 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also rushed for 48 yards and one touchdown on nine carries.

Sam Ray led the Eagles’ ground game, rushing for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

Brent Weeks contributed 45 rushing yards on 12 carries.

Ray led the Eagles defensively with seven tackles. Connor Rice, Gavin Dill, Chris Hermes and Caleb Phillips each contributed six tackles.

The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 2-3.

Torrey Pines

trounced Poway 35-7 in a nonleague game on Sept. 26.

The Falcons broke a scoreless tie in a decisive second quarter, when quarterback Sandy Plashkes threw for three touchdowns to send the Falcons into the intermission with a 21-0 lead.

Plashkes completed a 16-yard scoring pass to Lukas Braun that made it 7-0.

He also completed an 11-yard scoring pass to Connor Mead and a 12-yarder to Matt Feeler.

Christian Gange scored on a 10-yard run to make it 28-0.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 2-3.

Cathedral Catholic

erupted for 21 points in a decisive fourth quarter as the Dons defeated Newbury Park (Ventura County) 42-28 in a nonleague game on Sept. 26.

The Dons and Newbury Park were locked in a 21-21 tie going into the fourth quarter.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 4-1.

La Costa Canyon

extended its winning streak to four games as the Mavericks defeated Vista 17-0 in a nonleague game on Sept. 26.

The Mavericks set the tone early on Tanner Clark’s 39-yard scoring run in the first quarter.

They extended their lead to 14-0 on Cade Jackson’s scoring run from the 1 in the third quarter.

The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 4-1.

Volleyball:

Cathedral Catholic

extended its winning streak to four matches as the Dons defeated Point Loma 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 28-26, 25-18) in a Western League game on Sept. 24.

Lauren Woodard had 29 kills to lead the Dons and setter Jeni Clark had 39 assists.

The victory followed a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) league win against La Jolla the previous day.

Woodard had 18 kills to lead the Dons. Madison Linxwiler added nine kills and Cali Bunn added eight kills.

Clark contributed 32 assists.

The Dons improved to 3-0 in league and 7-5 overall for the season.

San Dieguito Academy

snapped a four-match losing streak as the Mustangs defeated Olympian 2-1 (25-10, 16-25, 15-11) in a nonleague Beach Cities tournament game on Sept. 27.

Mustangs setter Lindsey King had 18 assists and also contributed two aces.

Karina Langli led the Mustangs with eight kills and Emily Kimball added seven kills.

The Mustangs improved their overall record for the season to 12-5.

La Costa Canyon

defeated Santa Fe Christian 3-1 (32-30, 25-22, 21-25, 26-24) in a nonleague game on Sept. 23.

Lexi Sun led the Eagles with 26 kills. Casey Castillo contributed 15 kills and Emily Hubbard added 11.

Eagles setter Ellie Adamson had 27 assists and Alea Fregoso added 13 assists.

The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 6-4.

The Eagles fell to 6-4.

Field hockey:

Canyon Crest Academy

defeated Valley Center 5-1 in a nonleague game on Sept. 23.

Arielle Shahrabani scored three goals to lead the Ravens.

Kragen Metz added one goal and three assists, and Rayna Higuchi contributed two assists.

Ravens goalie Madi McIntyre had four saves.

The Ravens improved their overall record for the season to 7-2.

Cathedral Catholic

defeated Mount Carmel 2-1 in a nonleague game on Sept. 25.

Paige Kelly scored both goals to lead the Dons.

Water polo:

Cathedral Catholic

placed third in the American’s Finest City Invitational tournament as the Dons finished the tournament with a 14-7 victory over MiraCosta of Manhattan Beach on Sept. 27.

Cooper Milton scored four goals to lead the Dons, and Erik Siegel added two goals.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 6-5.

Golf:

• Torrey Pines won the 9th Annual Rainbow Sandal Lady Triton Invitational tournament in San Clemente on Sept. 26.

The Falcons shot a combined 376 (11 over par) as they won the tournament for a second straight year.

Carolyn Zhao shot a one-under-par 72 to lead the Falcons. Zhao placed third individually.
