La Jolla struck first, scoring on a 1-yard run early in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead, but the Eagles answered quickly, with Giannotti scoring on a 73-yard run on the Eagles ensuing possession for the first of three unanswered SFC touchdowns.

Giannotti also scored on a 62-yard interception return in a decisive fourth quarter, when the Eagles outscored their opponent 21-0 to snap a 21-21 deadlock.

  • Cathedral Catholic continued its assault on the archives, extending its school record winning streak to 26 games with a 48-6 thrashing of San Pasqual of Escondido in a nonleague game on Oct. 2.

The Dons’ winning streak includes two San Diego Section Div. III titles and a state title last year.
But for now, it is their 5-0 overall record for the season that seems to be all that matters to coach Sean Doyle.

The Dons currently own the fourth longest winning streak in county history. Sweetwater set the county record with 36 straight wins in 1985, according to the San Diego Section’s official website, cifsds.org.

“I think they know that just by winning the state (title) last year we have a bigger target on our backs than we would normally,” Doyle said. “I’m sure if people keep writing about it, that makes it bigger, but I don’t think the kids really think of it in that manner.

“I know that their focus on that next game.”

With a bye this week, the Dons have an extra week to prepare for their Oct. 16 Eastern League opener against Lincoln (all four area teams have byes this week).

The Dons focus on both sides of the ball was readily apparent in the San Pasqual game.

They scored 34 unanswered points to start the game, with running back Jonny Martin running in from the 45 and 31 in the first quarter, when the Dons opened up a 13-0 lead.

Martin rushed for a career high 249 carries and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Max Brewer was 9-for-12 passing for 217 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and Chance Early caught five passes for 172 yards.

Jordan Lance led the Dons defensively with eight tackles, and Tyler Vasquez and Sam Zimmer each had seven tackles.

Injured linemen Mustafa Jalil (knee) and A.J. Montes, who suffered multiple injuries in a car crash last month, both played for the first time in three weeks. Both contributed three tackles.

Defensive back Ryan McLoughlin, who suffered a broken collarbone in the Dons season opener, could play in the Lincoln game, Doyle said.

  • Torrey Pines took an early lead and never looked back as the Falcons defeated El Camino 28-13 in a nonleague game on Oct. 2 for their second straight win.

The Falcons, who were winless in their first three games to start the season, have outscored their last two opponents 70-13.
Falcons quarterback John Cabot threw for three touchdowns to spearhead the victory, and running back Joseph Driscoll rushed for 110 yards and one touchdown.

The Falcons set the tone in the first quarter, taking a 14-7 lead on a 17-yard scoring pass from Cabot to Ryan Rodas, and Driscoll’s 40-yard run late in the quarter.

Cabot completed a 22-yard scoring pass to Jered Wood late in the second quarter to give the Falcons a 21-7 lead going into the intermission.
