Week in Sports: Torrey Pines football extends winning streak

Football:

In their final tuning for Avocado League play, Torrey Pines looked just fine.

The Falcons extended their season-opening winning streak to five games with a 56-21 trouncing of Rancho Buena Vista of Vista in a nonleague game on Oct. 8.

John Wilson rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Falcons, and Andrew Fargo rushed 121 yards and one touchdown.

Falcons quarterback John Cabot completed 7 of 9 pass attempts for 87 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The Falcons, who hadn’t even been scored on until four weeks into their season in a 42-18 victory over Carlsbad on Oct. 1, had a commanding 56-0 lead when they surrendered their first points in the third quarter of the Rancho Buena Vista game.

The Falcons are off to their best start since 2006, when they won their first nine games.

Santa Fe Christian defeated Palo Verde of Blythe 27-21 in a nonleague game on Oct. 9. Eagles running back Austin Knoth rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, and Josh Estill rushed for 81 yards on 16 carries.

Eagles quarterback Connor Moore completed a 73-yard scoring strike to Barrett Floyd in the first quarter that gave the Eagles a 13-0 lead.

Knoth scored on an 11-yard run in the second quarter that gave the Eagles a 20-6 lead going into the intermission.

Knoth’s 48-yard scoring run in the third quarter gave the Eagles a decisive 27-6 lead.

The Eagles improved their overall record for the season to 4-2.

San Diego Jewish Academy played to 15-15 tie with Julian in a Citrus League South game on Oct. 7.

The Lions took a 12-0 lead in the first quarter when Bruno Garcia-Jed returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, and Kevin Yedid-Botton scored from the 1.

Jake Posnock kicked a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Lions a 15-0 lead.

The Lions fell to 1-0-1 in league and 1-1-1 overall for the season.

Volleyball:

Canyon Crest Academy defeated Del Norte of San Diego 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 25-27, 25-8) in a nonleague game on Oct. 5.

Samantha Cash led the Ravens with 12 kills and Delaney Sullivan added 11 kills.

Ravens setter Kyana Miller had 30 assists, eight kills and and eight aces.

The Ravens improved their overall record for the season to 19-2.

Cathedral Catholic defeated Scripps Ranch of San Diego 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-11) in a Western League game on Oct. 8.

Taylor Milton had 20 kills to lead the Dons and setters Jaclyn Williamson and Lauren Miller each had 17 assists.

The Dons improved to 2-0 in league and 13-4 overall for the season.

Santa Fe Christian defeated Tri-City Christian of Vista 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-17) in a Coastal League game on Oct. 8.

Annie Francis had 10 kills to lead the Eagles and Michaela Heil had 22 assists.

The Eagles improved to 1-1 in league and 11-7 overall for the season.

Water polo:

Weston Paulson scored six goals to lead Cathedral Catholic to an 11-8 nonleague victory over Santana of Santee on Oct. 8.

Cody Smith added three goals and Robert Beck contributed three assists.

Dons goalie Bryan Cook had 21 saves.

Santa Fe Christian defeated El Camino of Oceanside 13-3 in an Avocado League West game on Oct. 8.

Golf:

Jennifer Peng shot a one-over-par 37 to lead Torrey Pines to a 205-209 victory over Poway as the unbeaten Falcons defeated Poway in a Palomar League match on a nine-hole course at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club on Oct. 7.

Sarah Baek shot a 38 for Torrey Pines, which improved to 4-0 in league and 13-0 overall for the season.

Cathedral Catholic defeated University City of San Diego 216-307 in a Western League match at Torrey Pines South on Oct. 7.

Joyce Kim shot a three-over-par 39 to lead the Dons, who improved to 6-1 in league.

Tennis:

Canyon Crest Academy remained undefeated as the Ravens defeated La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad 11-7 in a nonleague match on Oct. 6.

Ravens No. 1 singles player Erica Nesses went a combined 18-1.

The Ravens improved their overall record for the season to 9-0.

Field Hockey:

Torrey Pines defeated Rancho Bernardo 3-0 in an Avocado League opener for both teams on Oct. 7. Molly Bettencourt, Caroline Boucher and Lucy Busby each scored one goal for the Falcons, and goalie Heather Schleisher had four saves. The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 11-2.

Canyon Crest Academy defeated Valley Center of San Diego 2-1 in a nonleague game on Oct. 7. Natalie Hoffman and Jodi Helsel each scored one goal for the Ravens, who improved their overall record for the season to 7-2-1.
