Woman accosted near Dog Beach
A 38-year-old woman was accosted on the Del Mar River Path over the weekend. The Del Mar resident was walking to Dog Beach on the path around 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, when a man started verbally attacking the woman, who wished to remain anonymous.
The man yelled, “You better run,” and called her an obscene name before chasing after her. The woman screamed and ran to a man fishing on the rocks and stayed with him while she called the police and waited for her boyfriend to pick her up.
She and her boyfriend then followed the suspect in their car while waiting for the police to arrive. Encinitas Sheriff’s Department evaluated the man and found him “eccentric” but not a danger to himself or others.
“He wasn’t crazy enough to lock up,” said Patrol Sgt. Chuck Yancey, noting he wished they could arrest people for being “jerks” but they had no cause to arrest the man.
The victim lives near the pathway, but she said she is reluctant to use it after this incident.
“It’s such a beautiful walk, but it’s just not worth it,” she said. “There are always weirdos around and I just don’t think it’s safe.”
Yancey said he was unaware of any similar incidents happening in the area of the walkway.
