Work begins on ADA-compliant path

The San Dieguito Restoration Team began construction Monday on a coastal access path to Del Mar’s Dog Beach that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The 750-foot path will be located on the western side of Camino del Mar, north of the river mouth, following the natural slope to the beach. The project also calls for an additional ADA parking space at the north entrance of the path.

Construction is estimated to be complete before July 4 to avoid affecting holiday attendance. Crews will work during normal business hours and not on weekends. Four of the beach’s volleyball courts will be temporarily relocated during the project, and a few parking spots may be taken away during certain phases. Traffic flow should not be impacted.

The path is required as part of the coastal restoration project and is being funded by San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison.

The path will be landscaped with native plants from the area after the holiday, with that process taking about a week.
