Canyons Aquatic Club hosted the 2018 Speedo Summer Sectionals at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center July 19-22. The Rancho San Dieguito (RSD) team took 33 student-athletes to the event sponsored by USA Swimming and Southern California Swimming in Santa Clarita. The RSD team finished in fourth place overall among 80 teams competing from California and Nevada and earned the highest scores of any team from San Diego and Imperial Counties.
RSD swimmers moved on to the long-course Summer US Junior National Championships in Irvine held July 31-Aug. 4 and will compete in the short-course Winter US Junior National Championships in Austin, Texas from Dec. 5-8.
RSD swimmers Yuma Dugas, Leah Coffin and Kira Crage medaled in the 100 and 200- meter butterfly, 100- meter butterfly, and 50-meter freestyle events, respectively. All three achieved USA Open Qualifying Times. Kaito Koyama and Josh He received Summer Junior National qualifying times in the 100-meter breaststroke. Kathryn Lundh achieved Winter Junior Nationals qualifying times in the 100-meter butterfly and 400-meter freestyle.
“Our team had an amazing meet, and our athletes displayed RSD team values - respect, integrity, leadership, quality, teamwork, and excellence - throughout the competition,” said RSD Aquatics Director Joe Benjamin.
