Torrey Pines girls volleyball team receives CIF San Diego Section Victory With Honor Award

The Torrey Pines girls volleyball team achieved a distinction unmatched by any other team in the school’s history. The team was recognized with the CIF San Diego Section Victory With Honor Award. One team at the end of the season is identified as best exemplifying the CIF core principles of good character, both on and off the field: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

The TPHS volleyball team met those criteria admirably. Not only were they at one point ranked first in the state, but also second in the country. The award, sponsored by Epic Wings ‘N Things restaurants, requires the team have no player or coach ejections during the season, no office referrals among the players over 12 months, and a combined grade point average no lower than 2.75. The team’s combined GPA was 3.56. No other TPHS girls volleyball team had ever advanced as far in post-season CIF competition.

The girls were honored at an intimate lunch gathering, and Coach Brennan Dean acknowledged the team’s achievement. What those in the room already knew was that the team had an incredible season: their 34 wins and 4 losses gave them final ratings by MaxPreps as fifth in the nation, second in California, first in California Open Division and first in San Diego Section. Prep Volleyball ranked them #8 in the nation.

But as to the prestigious Victory With Honor Award, TPHS Principal Rob Coppo indicated he had never seen a more deserving team. “It was your character that stood out. Your winning record was likewise impressive.”

“There are 127 schools in the CIF section, 115 playing volleyball. There are over 500 teams, and we picked you guys,” stated Jim Esterbrooks of the CIF San Diego Section. “You guys stood out. You are exemplary as an entire team. Thank you for being who you are and what you are.”

The team roster is: Jaden Whitmarsh, Kiara McNulty, Daniela Fornaciari, Ellie Auerbach, Brie Severino, Kendra Ham, Emily Fitzner, Mikayla Azcue, Emma Roberts, Sophia Chen, Macall Peed, Emma Hakenesch, Carly Diehl, Trinity Durfee, Megan Kraft and Camilla Appiani.
