Falcon Frosh fall to Pirates
by John Schreiber and P.J. Mikolajewski
On a beautiful afternoon at Oceanside High School, the Frosh Falcons lost a tough game to the Pirates 14-21.
At the inception, it appeared that Torrey Pines would have a prolific scoring afternoon. Tucker Drawdy returned the opening kickoff 30 yards, putting the Falcon offense in great field position at their own 45-yard line. Like a fine tuned engine, the Falcon hurry-up offense drove down the field keeping the Pirate defense on their heels with a great combination of run and pass plays. On the sixth play, Miles Hasting dropped back, rolled right and fired a 16 yard touchdown pass to Tucker Drawdy. The offensive line lead by Alexander Garza, Grant Crocket, Ryan Callahan, Kevin Caballero, and Robert Gacula Jr., provided excellent blocking and pass protection during the scoring drive.
The next two possessions for both teams ended with punts. Then with a minute left in the first quarter the Pirates scored. A failed extra point attempt kept the Falcons ahead, 7-6. Once again, the Falcons had a nice kickoff return with a powerful 10-yard run by Justin Vilchis. A few plays later, Hastings completed a 19-yard pass to Evan Galluzi to the Oceanside 39-yard line. Pressure and penetration by the Pirate defensive line thwarted the Falcon drive ending in a punt. For the rest of the second quarter, the Falcons were unable to get the offense moving. With 2:56 seconds left in the half, the Pirates’ hurry-up offense drove down the field and scored a rushing touchdown. Oceanside had a successful 2 point conversion making the score 7-14 at halftime.
Most of the 3rd quarter saw each team having a couple of possessions without success. However, at the end of the third Quarter, Oceanside completed a long pass to their receiver on a post route for a touchdown making it 7-21. The Falcons received the kickoff, and the offense took the field. After three ineffective plays, Torrey Pines faced a fourth down. In their quick kick, punt formation, Hasting tossed the ball to Jason Heine who faked the kick and threw the ball to the tight end, Robert Gacula, Jr. for a 40 yard gain to the Oceanside 15 yard line. The Falcons got the ball to the 9 yard line, but were unable to score, turning the ball over on downs.
In the beginning of the 4th quarter, Oceanside had the ball deep in their own territory. On second down, Jason Heine intercepted an Oceanside pass and returned it to the Pirate 5 yard line. A few plays later, Miles Hastings completed a 6 yard touchdown pass to Porter Holland. Jason Heine kicked the extra point making the score 14-21. Unfortunately, the Falcons were unable to mount a comeback and the final score of the game was 14-21.
The Falcons fall to 4-3. Game next week at El Camino HS.
