The week in sports: Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe and Solana Beach

Boys basketball:

• It seems like from one day to the next, it’s always somebody else stepping up for Torrey Pines.

The Falcons’ depth affords them the luxury of not having to rely on any one individual to continually carry the team, and they’ve taken full advantage of that throughout their nonleague campaign.

A two-game stretch after the holiday break typifies a formula that has them off to a 15-2 start.

In an 85-64 nonleague victory over Royal of Simi Valley (Ventura County) on Jan. 10, Timmy Saunders led the Falcons with 20 points, Marek Sullivan added 19 points and Jack Beach contributed 18 points.

Dominic Hovasse also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points.

That victory followed a 69-51 win against San Marcos the previous day in which Jackson strong led the Falcons with 19 points.

Sullivan and Hovasse each added 11 points and Saunders contributed 10 points.

La Costa Canyon lost to Price of Los Angeles 69-66 in a nonleague game on Jan. 13.

The loss followed a 69-58 nonleague win against Escondido three days earlier.

The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 11-5.

Cathedral Catholic lost to St. Augustine 72-55 in its Western League opener on Jan. 9.

The Dons fell to 0-1 in league and 7-6 overall for the season.

San Diego Jewish Academy lost to Calvin Christian 67-37 in a nonleague game on Jan. 8.

Jordan Battaglia scored 13 points in defeat for the Lions and Aaron Perez added eight points.

The loss followed a 75-67 defeat at the hands of Calvin Christian in a nonleague game on Jan. 6 in which Battaglia led the Lions with 24 points.

Ilya Levin added 12 points, and Elliot Muller and Ivan Fang contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Lions fell to 5-10 overall for the season.

Girls basketball:

La Costa Canyon defeated Sweetwater 56-31 on Jan. 10 in a SoCal Run and Gun Against Cancer tournament game.

Taylor Pierce scored 18 points to lead the Mavericks and Rachel Dumiak added 16 points.

Jessica Curtis contributed 10 points.

The victory followed a 73-56 nonleague win against Ramona on Jan. 6 in which Pierce poured in 30 points.

Curtis added 14 points and Kelly Reed contributed 10 points.

The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 13-2.

Cathedral Catholic lost to Eastlake 48-45 in a SoCal Run and Gun Against Cancer tournament game on Jan. 10.

Sydney Nornes scored 17 points in defeat for the Dons and Sarah Mosser added 11 points.

The loss followed a 62-36 victory over Our Lady of the Peace 62-36 in the Dons’ Western League opener the previous day.

The Dons improved to 1-0 in league and 7-7 overall for the season.

Canyon Crest Academy defeated Pacific Ridge 35-24 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9.

The victory followed a 37-31 win against Coronado three days earlier.

The Ravens improved their overall record for the season to 8-1.

Torrey Pines lost to Mission Hills 79-56 in a nonleague game on Jan. 6.

Sierra Campisano scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds and six blocks in defeat for the Falcons and Christina Ellis added 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Falcons fell to 10-5 overall for the season.

Girls soccer:

Cathedral Catholic went 1-1-1 in three games at the National Elite Prep Showcase in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Dons opened the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Nolan Catholic of Fort Worth in which Dana Dalton scored two goals to lead the Dons and Olivia Erlbeck added one goal and one assist.

Riley Marshall added one goal and Kelsey Irwin, Jessica Clegg and Kerry Kuhnert each added one assist.

The Dons lost to Plano West (Plano, Texas) 2-1 on Jan. 9 and played St. Stephen’s Episcopal (Austin, Texas) to a 1-1 tie the next day.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 12-1-1.

San Dieguito Academy defeated Mt. Carmel 1-0 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9.

Maia Nelson scored the Mustangs only goal.

Goalie Parker Rytz, who was credited with the shutout, had nine saves.

The Mustangs improved their overall record for the season to 4-4-1.

Torrey Pines defeated Del Norte 1-0 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9.

Lucy Ferrari scored the Falcons’ only goal off an assist from Anissa Dadkhah.

Falcons goalie Veronica Romines had a season-high 12 saves.

The Falcons played La Costa Canyon to a 0-0 tie two days earlier.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 5-2-3.

Boys soccer:

Torrey Pines lost to Vista 3-2 in a nonleague game on Jan. 9.

Asher Booth scored one goal and had one assist and Matthew Botsford contributed one goal in defeat for the Falcons. Blake McAtee added one assist.

The Falcons fell to 8-3-3 overall for the season.
